How does the final grade calculation work?

To calculate your final exam grade, you need to know your current grade, the overall grade you are aiming to achieve, and the weight of your final exam. Based on these three inputs this calculator uses the following formula to calculate your final grade.

Required Final Exam Grade = Desired Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Final Exam Weight)) Final Exam Weight

Let's take an example to improve your understanding of calculations with the following inputs.

Suppose you want to achieve an 85% overall grade in your course. The grade you currently have in the course is 75%, and the weight of your final exam is 50%. You can use the following formula to calculate the required final exam grade.

Current Grade = 75%

Final Exam Weight = 50% (or 0.5 in decimal)

Desired (Required) Grade = 85%

Formula = 85 - (75 × (1 - 0.5)) 0.5 = 95%

Step-by-Step Calculation

1. Convert Final Exam Weight to Decimal

Final Exam Weight= 50% = 50/100 = 0.5

2. Calculate the Current Grade Portion

Current Grade Portion= Current Grade × ( 1 − Final Exam Weight)

=75 × (1 − 0.5) = 75 × 0.5 =37.5

3. Calculate the Required Final Exam Grade

Required Grade = Desired Grade - Current Grade Portion Final Exam Weight
= 85 - 37.5 0.5 = 47.5 0.5 = 95%

So you need to score 95% on your final exam to achieve a total grade of 85%.

Final Grade Calculation with Multiple Assessments

If you have completed multiple tests, quizzes, homework assignments, or exams before your final test or exam and want to calculate your required final grade, then this calculator can help. All you need to do is input each of your prior assessments along with their grade and weight. After that, input the grade you are targeting along with the final exam weight to get your final grade.

Suppose that a student wants an overall target grade of 79%. The final exam is worth 50% of the total grade. The student has two assessments before finals:

  1. Test/Quiz: Scored 70%, Weight 15%
  2. Other Assessments: Scored 78%, Weight 35%

To determine the required score on the final exam based on the given inputs, the following values need to be entered into the calculator as shown in the graphic below.

So the student needs to score 82.40% on their final exam to achieve an overall grade of 79%.

Benefits of Final Grade Calculator

Here are some benefits of using our easy final exam calculator:

Skip Manual Calculations

This grade calculator saves you valuable time by eliminating the need for manual calculations. Instead of searching for the right formula or double-checking your calculations, you can simply input your current and target grade, along with the weight percentage, to get accurate results instantly.

Create Smarter Study Plans

Knowledge is crucial for effective exam preparation. Understanding your target scores can help you create a focused study plan. For example, if you need to achieve 80% in your final exam for Subject A to reach your desired grade, but only 60% in Subject B, you can quickly determine that you should allocate more study time to Subject A. This clarity in your goals makes it easier to manage your study schedule effectively.

Set Realistic Goals

Goals are most effective when they are realistic. This calculator helps you determine the score you need to achieve your desired grade and whether that goal is mathematically possible. If the required grade appears unrealistic or impossible to attain, you can adjust your desired grade accordingly. This approach helps prevent disappointment, leading to better decision-making and more achievable outcomes.

Know Where You Stand

If you're unsure of your Current Average Grade before taking your final exam, this calculator can help. By inputting the grades and weights of each assessment, such as assignments and tests, along with your desired final grade, the calculator performs all the calculations at once to show you the final grade you need.

Gain Peace of Mind

Uncertainty leads to anxiety, while clarity gives peace of mind. When you understand your current position and what you need to achieve, you can eliminate the "What if" questions and start focusing on what needs to be done.
